Jenny Peterson Earns Fellowship Designation

The Iowa Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA} Chapter has announced that Jenny Peterson recently became a Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (FHFMA). 
To be awarded the FHFMA distinction, applicants must be credentialed as a Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP); be an HFMA member for at least five years; complete a bachelor’s degree or 120 semester hours from an accredited college or university; and volunteer in HFMA or the healthcare industry.  More than 1,700 HFMA members nationwide have achieved this accomplishment in the organization’s 68-year history.
Jenny’s current employment is at Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) as a Senior Decision Support Analyst.  Jenny has been in healthcare for nine years, a member of HFMA for five years, and a Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP) for three years.  When asked why she decided to apply for the FHFMA, Jenny responded, “I decided to apply for my FHFMA when I looked around at a recent HFMA event and noticed the people in the room that I knew were certified.  They are all leaders in their organizations and I had developed a high level of respect for many of them already due to the amount of time they spend volunteering with our chapter.  In addition, I had heard several times from my manager how well I represented CHI both inside and outside the company walls.  I thank HFMA for an opportunity to do just that and I thought it would only bring my volunteerism with the chapter full circle.”
Jenny's volunteer activities include participating on the Chapter Communications Committee.  In addition, Jenny earned some of her 25 Founder’s points through her second term as an HFMA Iowa Chapter Board member.  On gaining personally from volunteering for the Iowa Chapter, Jenny said, “I have done a lot of volunteering over the years with my children's activities, my church, and a couple of other professional organizations.  HFMA stands out for so many reasons.  I have met so many hard-working and fun people in our chapter, and I have made some great friendships along the way.  Not only is our chapter a great way to stay up on what is happening in our ever-changing industry, but it has also been very rewarding to see events like our Women's Conference and our volunteer efforts at places like Dorothy's House come together.”

HFMA’s Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP) is intended to build this highly prized value - driving work style. The CHFP:
  • Is a learning program;
  • Presents the business context in which health operates;
  • Builds comprehensive, multidisciplinary perspective on the pressing mandate to improve value in health care through clinical cooperation.
The CHFP is a value-driving certification in that certified healthcare finance professionals can take on a value-driving work-style characterized by:

  • Creativity – The readiness to explore potential new business initiatives;

The Value-Driving Equation:
Value-Driving finance professional = (professional skills and experience) X CHFP
The program consists of two modules:
1)     HFMA’s Business of Health Care course and
2)     Operational Excellence: Pursuing Strategy.
The program is entirely online, self-contained and self-paced. The CHFP designation is achieved by the successful completion of both modules. A downloadable learner’s Concept Guide is available with the course and many HFMA chapters provide CHFP preparation assistance. The CHFP program is easy to access on HFMA’s website, simple to use and brings the business knowledge needed today into one place.

Certification: Enhancing the HFMA Experience

Recent surveys show that there is a clear relationship between certification and career advancement: 
  • Certification accounts for approximately 13 percent of the variance in income between certified and non-certified members. The greatest percentage of certified members have an income of more than $150,000 (18%). The greatest percentage of non-certified members have an income of more than $50,000 but less than $60,000 (14%).
  • Eighty-four percent of certified members report it is more likely that job applicants will be hired if they are certified by HFMA. Fifty-six percent of non-certified members report it is more likely that a job applicant will be hired if certified by HFMA.
  • Seventy-two percent of employers say that they are more likely to hire a job applicant for a financial position in healthcare if she/he is certified by HFMA. More than two-thirds (69%) of search firms say the fact that a job applicant is certified by HFMA increases the likelihood they will be placed.
