Recognizing Five Years of Sustained Excellence

Jenny Peterson Earns Fellowship Designation

Jp

Submitted by Hilary Christiansen

The Iowa Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA} Chapter has announced that Jenny Peterson recently became a Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (FHFMA).

To be awarded the FHFMA distinction, applicants must be credentialed as a Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP); be an HFMA member for at least five years; complete a bachelor’s degree or 120 semester hours from an accredited college or university; and volunteer in HFMA or the healthcare industry.  More than 1,700 HFMA members nationwide have achieved this accomplishment in the organization’s 68-year history.

Jenny’s current employment is at Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) as a Senior Decision Support Analyst.  Jenny has been in healthcare for nine years, a member of HFMA for five years, and a Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP) for three years.  When asked why she decided to apply for the FHFMA, Jenny responded, “I decided to apply for my FHFMA when I looked around at a recent HFMA event and noticed the people in the room that I knew were certified.  They are all leaders in their organizations and I had developed a high level of respect for many of them already due to the amount of time they spend volunteering with our chapter.  In addition, I had heard several times from my manager how well I represented CHI both inside and outside the company walls.  I thank HFMA for an opportunity to do just that and I thought it would only bring my volunteerism with the chapter full circle.”

Jenny's volunteer activities include participating on the Chapter Communications Committee.  In addition, Jenny earned some of her 25 Founder’s points through her second term as an HFMA Iowa Chapter Board member.  On gaining personally from volunteering for the Iowa Chapter, Jenny said, “I have done a lot of volunteering over the years with my children's activities, my church, and a couple of other professional organizations.  HFMA stands out for so many reasons.  I have met so many hard-working and fun people in our chapter, and I have made some great friendships along the way.  Not only is our chapter a great way to stay up on what is happening in our ever-changing industry, but it has also been very rewarding to see events like our Women's Conference and our volunteer efforts at places like Dorothy's House come together.”

In addition to FHFMA, HFMA offers a variety of other certification programs: Certified Healthcare Financial Professional® (CHFP®), Certified Inpatient Coding Auditor (CICA), Certified Specialist Business Intelligence (CSBI), Certified Specialist Physician Practice Management (CSPPM), Certified Specialist Managed Care (CSMC), and Certified Specialist Accounting & Finance (CSAF).

If you are interested in expanding your knowledge or refreshing your current skills through the Certified Healthcare Financial Professional program, contact Hilary Christiansen at hchristiansen@grapehospital.com or visit hfma.org/certification for more information.

Advance Your Career as a
Certified Healthcare Financial Professional ~

Get Your CHFP from HFMA

By Joseph Abel, CPCC, ACC, PhD
November 2018

Impressive job skills are no longer enough to land a job with smart employers or to ensure a promotion. Employers want value-drivers.

Value-drivers are people with the capacity to continuously learn, develop new skills, and adapt to the dynamic business needs of the continuously evolving health-care industry. This type of employee understands the business context and consequently sniffs out opportunity, provokes thought, and helps shape innovation. Technical depth, breadth of perspective, and the inquisitiveness to search out new business approaches are the foundations for this value-driving work style.

HFMA’s Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP) is intended to build this highly prized value - driving work style. The CHFP:

  • Is a learning program;
  • Presents the business context in which health operates;
  • Builds comprehensive, multidisciplinary perspective on the pressing mandate to improve value in health care through clinical cooperation.

The CHFP is a value-driving certification in that certified healthcare finance professionals can take on a value-driving work-style characterized by:

  • Business Awareness – The ability to recognize the business implications of information presented to them;
  • Business Understanding – Thinking with the big picture, the business context at play;
  • Creativity – The readiness to explore potential new business initiatives;
  • Engagement – Getting into action; bringing new ideas to life to create value and growth;
  • Smart employees – People who not only see the need to be value-driving employees, but also commit to building that value-driving work style.

The Value-Driving Equation:

Value-Driving finance professional = (professional skills and experience) X CHFP

The program consists of two modules:

1)     HFMA’s Business of Health Care course and
2)     Operational Excellence: Pursuing Strategy.

The program is entirely online, self-contained and self-paced. The CHFP designation is achieved by the successful completion of both modules. A downloadable learner’s Concept Guide is available with the course and many HFMA chapters provide CHFP preparation assistance. The CHFP program is easy to access on HFMA’s website, simple to use and brings the business knowledge needed today into one place.

More details can be found here: www.hfma.org/CHFP.

HFMA Networking:  Good People Getting Together to Do Good Work
Dorothy's House

Summer charity 1
An HFMA member tries out some new skills at Dorothy's House.
Recently, our Iowa HFMA chapter members had a humbling opportunity to help a local not-for-profit organization in Des Moines.  After our meeting July 19, 2018, approximately thirty volunteers headed to Dorothy’s House to undertake landscaping and outdoor home maintenance services.

Everyone put in plenty of sweat equity for a couple hours, but with the help of cookies made by a resident, we all powered through and got as much done as we were asked to do.

Dorothy’s House, founded by Kellie Markey, provides a safe place for the practice of life for teen and youth girls whose lives have been interrupted by the sex trafficking industry.  They are provided basic needs, beginning with security in a home environment.  They also receive a healthy diet, specialized care, education and training, and the ability to recognize their potential and dream of a positive future.

Much perspective was gained in this amazing opportunity to help Kellie and her organization, in whatever small way we did.

The members and leaders of the Iowa HFMA chapter continue to put others before themselves.  Once again, good people got together and did good work.

Thank you to all who volunteered their time and talents.  Kellie could not say thank you enough.

Dave Muhs and Karoleen "Charlie" Hammel, Henry County Health Center, accept the MAP Award at the HFMA National Conference In June 2018.
Iowa HFMA members have earned even more recognition at the national level.  Henry County Health Center (HCHC) was recently named a National HFMA 2018 MAP Award Winner.

This award recognizes high performance in revenue cycle management.

At left, Dave Muhs and Karoleen "Charlie" Hammel from HCHC accept the MAP Award at the HFMA National Conference held in June 2018.

As a national award winner, HCHC met industry-standard revenue cycle benchmarks, implemented patient-centered recommendations and best practices, and achieved outstanding patient satisfaction.

HCHC is one of only fourteen hospitals to earn the MAP Award in 2018.  It is also the only Iowa hospital, and one of only two Critical Access Hospitals (CAH) in the country to receive this national recognition.

As if that weren't enough, HCHC is the only CAH in the nation to win the MAP Award more than once.

Congratulations, Henry County Health Center!!!
